Paper Prototyping — Prototyping Part 2
Paper Prototyping — When?
If you follow my work, you surely know that I’m passionate about visual thinking and applying sketching in a design process. Consequently, I love Paper Prototyping, too. :)
Paper Prototypes are great for…
- Identifying the missing parts
- Testing out the structure
- Designing the main userflows
- Determining the key interactions
- Thinking about edge cases and different UI states
And you can use this type of prototyping at any stage of your design process!
Criticism
Some people say that paper prototyping is not efficient, and that you should grab your digital tools right after sketching. In some cases, this might be true. However, what if you want to quickly prototype something that includes a lot of “if-then” logical operations? Or what if you want to prototype in a highly collaborative way? Or what if you want to quickly demonstrate your idea to the developers? I believe that there are many-many valid use cases. I listed out a lot of advantages of paper prototyping in this sketch.
